Aorangi Halberg Tournament Report 2017

The Aorangi Men’s tournament was held at the St Andrews Golf Club on Thursday 27th April. The event was well organised and extremely well run by the St Andrews team led by Peter Rae and Gordon Hardacre. A special thanks too must go to Neville Forrest and the Maungati team who helped with sponsorship.

After severe flooding earlier the Greens staff had worked very hard to get the course playable and although still very soft underfoot the course was a credit to them. The day was perfect for golf and the field of 120 players had an enjoyable day even though the scores were a little lower than usual due to the heavy conditions.

Results were:

Tankard Senior Player Doug Bruce (Grande Vue) 39pts

Tankard Junior Player Mike McGuire (Rakaia) 38 pts

Winning team Manuka (Temuka 1) – Dick Maryatt, Stephen Mackle, Colin Attridge, Carl Mathewson 133pts

Runners Up New Holland (Temuka 2) - David Will, Phil Crotty, Graham Pooke, John Donoghue 131pts
Third Maungati – Neville Forrest, Peter MacFarlane, Eddie Duffy, Jeff Wright 125pts

Guest of Honour, National President Tom Whittaker, spoke of the value of the Halberg Tournaments and the contribution that they make to the Halberg Trust. He acknowledged the support of the Clubs and the work of members in organising the tournament.

Aorangi President, Jack Allan, also acknowledged the tremendous work that the Greens staff had done in getting the course to a playable condition after the severe flooding. He thanked the Club members from St Andrews and neighbouring Club Maungati who had worked hard to arrange sponsorship and put together a significant prize and raffle table.

Early estimates are that the tournament has raised in the order of $5000.
