Wellington 2018 Halberg Day Reports
For the Year Ending December 2018 Funds Raised at the Wellington Halberg Days was $31000.00 - a great result thank you.
Manor Park Golf Club 28th January 2018
A good field of 46 players, were subjected to a very hot (30C) Sunday at Manor Park. A strong field with half the men’s field on a 14 handicap or less.
Some excellent scoring with MP’s Brian White men’s 15+ division on 41 points winning the Alan Duff trophy. He was closely followed by MP members Airdre McEwen, women’s division with 39 points and Siaosi Manuele men’s 14 and under division also with 39 points. Best Eagle was Terry Bastion also with 39 points. The scoring was good such that the 13th placegetter had 36 points.
Monies raised were $775.00.
Shandon Golf Club 24th February
On a perfect day 40 Eagles fronted up at Shandon to battle it out. Despite the good conditions no one was able to better 36 points. The winners who emerged were Gaye Langridge (36 points) and Mike Quinn (36 points. 17 other players were able to secure a prize. A total of approx $725 was raised.

Wainuiomata Golf Club 25th February
We had a field of 39 players, with the event raising approx $670.00.

Waikanae Golf Club 11th March
On a sun filled day in early March the Waikanae Eagles held their annual Halberg Day. We had 64 in the field and some very good scores were recorded.
The Men’s winner was Richmond Lee with 47pts and the Ladies winner Ruth Scott with 42pts. There were 11 players with 40 or better. The best Eagle was Larry Balloch with 40pts
We had 10 Eagles in attendance. They were Maurice Turner, Paul Hawkes, Malcolm Chapman, Terry Bastion, Fiona Kearns, Alex Ross, Larry Balloch, Bryan Kilmister, all of who played, plus Kevin Murphy, and Nelson Crosbie.
Our thanks go the 22 sponsors who helped our prize table and cash donations which helped us raise $ 1942 for the Halberg Foundation.

Eketahuna Golf Club 24th March
A happy day was had by all at Eketahuna Golf Club on Saturday 24th March.
The weather was kind until the last few holes when some got a little damp!!.
There were 17 Eagles in attendance, one of them being life member Maurice Turner. The top Eagles score for the day was by one of our local Eagles, Jim Sutherland with 41pts.
We had a great prize table with every player receiving a prize.
With our raffles, auction, etc.etc. we raised $1,411-00. for this very worthy cause, the Halberg Disability Sports Foundation.
Our local players to represent our club in March 2019 will be Jenny Anderson & Tony Capes.

Te Marua Golf Club 8th April
An enjoyable day was had at Te Marua Golf Club on Sunday 8th April. With the Eagles present entered in a local disc draw. The best of the Eagles was Alex Ross who also scooped the funds from the disc draw, followed closely by Mike Newport. There were three 2's on the day. Men's winner was Ray Johnstone 41 Points closely followed by Dave Fildes on 40 Points and Alex Ross on 39 Points. Ladies Winner was Kim Abrahams with 36 points on count-back from Faye Turner also with 36 Points. Eagles present were Terry Bastion, Paul Hawkes, John Wallbank, Mike Newport and Alex Ross.
Castlepoint Golf Club 14th April
The Halberg Day was held in overcast conditions with no wind. A field of 26 players took part with the mens winner being Sam Johnston 40 points and ladies winner Jan Williams with 33 points, The womens winner to represent the club was Heather Ousey. $683.00 was raised on the day including an auction of donated items. The best team was S. Stevens 39, M Gates 33, Helen Nicholson 28, Jan Williams 33 for a total of 133. Eagles present on the day were E. Kenney. K. May, M. Gates, G. Jones, Jan Williams, B. Henson, A. Foreman, T. Nicholson, M. Newport, J Wallbank, A. Ross.
Wellington Halberg Regional Finals Field Day
On Sunday 18th March, we all met at Masterton Golf Club to contest a stableford and team competition involving all the winners of the 21 Halberg Days in the Wellington region together with invited guests, Eagles and Eaglasses.
69 players enjoyed a course in great condition, initially cloudy and then quite warm so some good scores were enjoyed on such a testing layout. The Masterton Golf Club and local Eagles provided great support for this event and we are very grateful for their support.
President David and Jane Howie & Patron Kevin Murphy were present together with 27 Eagles who were in attendance with a number playing in the competition.
Terry Bastion presented Patron and Halberg Trustee Kevin Murphy with a cheque for $35,000 to the Halberg Disability Sports Foundation from the Wellington Region Halberg Days for 2017.
David Howie, Kevin Murphy and Terry Bastion spoke to the gathering and thanked all the clubs that have provided such great support to the Eagles over the years.

Otaki Golf Club - 20th May 2018
On Friday the weather report was for rain and high winds for Sunday, but thanks to the weather gods we had a fine day with some wind on Sunday. The field teed off at 10am on the golf course in good condition with fast greens.
Thanks to the local Otaki and Paraparaumu sponsors we had an excellent prize and raffle table. Also, thanks to the players who generously supported the raffle and donated to the gambling odds on hole 12. Nobody got inside the 3m circle. All up we raised $1748.10
The overall Men’s winner was Bob Symons with 40 points and the Ladies winner was Fiona McBride with 38 points. The best Eagle on the day was Jim Sutherland with 38 Points.
Sixteen eagles were playing along with our National Patron and Life member Kevin Murphy and Life Member Neil Woodbury at the after-match function.
The best team score was 142 comprising D. Marshall 38, J. Clyma 31, M. Taratoa 33, B. Symons 40.
Carterton Golf Club - 9th June 2018
The weather was fine and 24 Eagles attended. Two new Eagles from Masterton, Allan Kirkham and Kevin Mackay were presented with their ties and badges.

A plentiful table of auction items comprising cakes, golf clubs etc including a single bed were auctioned by Graeme Howie. We managed to raise $2001.40.
Manor Park Mid Week Ladies - 22 August 2018
Very fortuitous weather as the two days before and two days after were wet and windy, but on the Wednesday the day was fine and reasonably calm. Course was wet after all the rain but despite this some good scores. Unfortunately, only 26 players were available (probably put off by the wet course) of which 8 were visiting men.
Gloria Stellin, Diane Taylor, Diane Small and Alex Ross won the team stableford competition with 111 points (best 3 counted) and runners up were Chris McCulloch, Janette Wishart, Sue Gathergood and Murray Riley with 98 points. Individual scores were Diane Taylor (39) Sue Gibbs (35) and Vickie Hildyard (32). Alex Ross (40), Murray Riley (39) & Alan Humphries (38) were the leading men. Five Eagles were present – Alex Ross, Paul Hawkes, Terry Bastion, John Wallbank and Richard Gibbs.
There was both an Irish Raffle (last number won the prize) as well as a main raffle.
Amount raised was $450.
Mahunga Golf Club - 1st September
The weather was quite good and the course was in good condition with only a few spots of water around. Unusually there were no local ladies able to play on the day.
Eagles in attendance were Kevin May, Terry Bastion, Alex Ross, Tony Taylor, Alan Kirkman, Mike Newport, John Duffy, Jim Sutherland, Brian Russo, John Wallbank, Kevin Hunter, Kevin McKay, Malcolm Chapman, and Paul Hawkes plus Janice Duffy and Lyn Sutherland representing the ladies.
Scoring was good with 40 points being the top score by Allan Biel and Ken Downing followed by 39 points from Terry Fleet. Lynne Sutherland had the best Ladies score with 35 points Tony Taylor had a nett eagle on the 12th Hole and finished with 39 points, with Jim Sutherland on 36 points and Alex Ross on 35 points.
A lively auction with some keen competition concluded proceedings.
Riversdale Beach Golf Club - 6th October 2018
The first time the Eagles visited the Riversdale Beach was in 1968 so this marked 50 years of association between the club, the Eagles and the Halberg Sports Disability Foundation. National President David Howie along with wife Jane and descendants of the original team to play the Eagles in 1968 were special Guests.
On a lovely beach day with temperature around 17 deg and a slight breeze a field of 51 teed off Sheryl Rackham a visitor from Manawatu led the women home with 38 points. Ray Hintz was the leading man on count back with 40 points. Ray and Penny Stonyer (37 points) will represent Riversdale at the Field day.

Trentham Camp Golf Club - 23rd September 2018
On Sunday23rd September Trentham Camp Golf Club held its annual Murray Halberg day to raise funds towards the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation. This year the club raised approximately $1,400 thanks to the support of the Wellington Eagles Society, Quinn’s Post Golf Adjunct, visitors from other clubs and our own club members.
Our Murray Halberg Champions this year are: Men Erich Jahnke and Women Carol Antipas.
Eagles present were: Rodney Orr, Terry Bastion, Alex Ross, Nigel Messenger, Mike Newport, Kerry Fenton, Carol Antipas, John Wallbank, and Paul Hawkes.
Martinborough Golf Club - 21 October 2018
The day was a typical Martinborough one, nice and fine with little wind. There were 42 players including 9 eagles. Managed to raise $1044. Results were:
Ladies – Marie Scrimshaw on 41 from Tingey on 40 and Julie Warner on 37.
Men – Malcolm Woods on 41 from Terry Fraei on 40 with Bill Jones Mike Newport and Marcus Howie on 39.
The representatives for the club will be Malcolm Woods and Marie Scrimshaw as well as Marion McKenzie from the Women’s day on Wednesday 24 October 2018.
Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club - 28 October 2018
The last Sunday in October proved a great day for the home of the Wellington Eagles Society to celebrate their contribution to the Halberg Trust. A fine day along with a full field of entries ensured a most successful day was had at Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club by all. The shotgun start at 1 pm resulted in a crowded clubhouse lounge around 5 pm. The prize table was typical of that provided by a great long list of sponsors and supporters, and extremely well presented thanks to the great attention from the ladies responsible, Sue Armstrong and Jenny Mackay,
Along with the tickets sold in a number of very popular raffles, the wonderful sum of $4,065.00 was raised for the Halberg Disability Foundation.
Winners on the day, Brian Chapman and Laurel Swan will represent the club at the Halberg Field Day next year.

Judgeford Golf Club - 17 November 2018
Though numbers were down a successful tournament was run for 33 starters. Unfortunately, the club had a weekend golf trip to the Wairarapa which affected numbers, however they did not get away scot free as every year we run a weekend fine's tin which is donated to Wellington Eagles, with the other income from our day.
Thanks to Adam and his greens staff the course was in great shape, and the weather good, so some very impressive scores were recorded. We must acknowledge also the tremendous help we had from the Golf shop. Miles Wareham for disc draw and results, and participating club eagles.
Prizes were donated by Liquorland Porirua and our club eagles. President Terry Bastion was called on to present the prizes and he spoke to our members on the role of the Eagles Golfing Society, Murray Halberg Trust, and the support for junior golfers.
The Prize winners were: Women - Sally Moffatt 39 Pts, Margaret McKeefry 36 pts, Lesley Lysaght 31pts. Men - Harrison Blain 47 pts, John Spence 41pts, Ian Hill 40pts, Best Eagles Richard Gibbs 38 pts, Terry Bastion 37 pts, Alex Ross 37 pts, Frank Bury 36 pts.

Ohariu Valley 18 Nov — From Malcolm Chapman
This was originally to be played on Saturday the 3rd of November. However, this was cancelled because of bad weather.
A field of 44 players played on Sunday 18 November in fine but slightly windy conditions. This included 10 visiting Eagles and 5 local Eagles.
The course was in great nick. The Club’s hospitality was enjoyed by those in attendance with the usual BBQ sausage after 9 holes.
The trophy donated by Phil Duffy and John Wallbank played between Eagles and Club members was won for the 1st time by the Eagles.
As in past years, entry fees, a well sponsored raffle table, sundry cash donations and the usual annual contribution from the fines tin enabled $2,319 to be raised.
The winners on the day were Eagles Murray Goodson and Fiona Kearns, The Clubs representatives for the 2019 Field Day are John Barrett and Wendy Van der Krogt.

Karori – 24 November 2018
This was held on November 24 in good and pleasant golfing conditions. It turned out to be a great day for golf which all of the 64 participants enjoyed. The men's winner was Gunter Karau and Gloria Grayson won the women's competition. A very entertaining auction was carried out by Keith Gaskin which generated many bids for various donations. We were very well supported by our sponsors and by way of entry fees, raffles and auctions we managed to raise $2370 for the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation
Petone Working Men’s Club Golf Adjunct – 9 December
As President, I was pleased to accept the invitation of the Club to attend their Christmas Cheer held at Shandon on 9 December in very good weather. There were a large number in attendance with some fine scores being recorded. There was a fine prize table with all participating receiving a prize and there were a large number of quick-fire raffles held for hams & meat packs. The club presented us a cheque for $3,500 to go to the Halberg Disability Foundation.
