PRESIDENTS AND SECRETARYS NEWSLETTER – MAY 2022 Contents:
PRESIDENTS REPORT. Welcome to this our first newsletter for 2022 and report on the AGM, the Executive changeover and the first of the Halberg Tournaments for this year. Following the cancellation of this year’s Convention the management meeting was held in Wellington at the Brentwood Hotel on 2nd March, and the AGM held later that same day. The following were elected to the executive for the next year. Patron Kevin Murphy, Wellington National President Bob Brent, Otago Senior Vice-President Richard Gibbs, Wellington Junior Vice-President TBA Immediate Past President Bob Rosevear, Northland Secretary/Treasurer Peter Brownie, Otago Reviewer Terry Bastion, Wellington It was agreed that attendance of a member of the National Executive at Halberg events around the country was appreciated by the regions and provided a vital opportunity for the average Eagle to meet and talk to a member of the Executive. A report on the cancelled Convention at Hamilton was received. The Convention sadly had to be cancelled at the last minute because of the uncertainty brought on by Covid. Over the last two years many changes were forced on the organising committee by various facilities becoming unavailable because they were commandeered for MIQ etc. The final straw really was the Omicron variant which forced them to cancel the Convention despite their best efforts to hold the event. A unanimous vote of thanks was given to the Waikato organising committee for the manner in which they persevered for so long with the planning of the Convention. Planning for the Hawkes Bay Convention from 20 to 22 February 2023 is well advanced. This follows Art Deco week in Hawke’s Bay and promises to be a wonderful event. Aorangi presented a report on the U17 tournament which they had spent a second year organising (as with the Hamilton Convention) and was scheduled to be held in Timaru last October. Like the Hamilton Convention it also had to be cancelled at the 11th hour because of Covid. The Executive also congratulated the Aorangi organisers for the tremendous amount of work they did over the last 2 years which sadly proved to be in vain. The 2022 U17 is being held at the Mangawhai Golf Club the 2nd week of the School Holidays. All participants will be staying at a Christian Camp which is just across the road from the course. Players will be transported to and from Auckland Airport by bus. Northland Eagles are being allocated to various tasks i.e. arranging transport from Auckland Airport and meeting players on arrival. A change to the eligibility criteria for the U17 was approved. The new eligibility criteria is Those wishing to enter the N.Z. Eagles U17 Boys and Girls Championship must be either a New Zealand Citizen or have proof of New Zealand Residency. A Child Protection Policy for the U17 was also approved – a copy of this has been sent to all District Secretaries.
FROM THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT Hello All Please let me introduce myself. I was born and raised in Central Otago (Alexandra) and my wife Laurel and I moved via Twizel to Oamaru in 1979 where I played golf and, for a time, was greenkeeper at Lower Waitaki Golf Club. In 2006 we moved to Cromwell to become moteliers and joined Cromwell Golf club. I was made an Eagle in 1998, something I believed was a real honour and I have enjoyed my time with the Society ever since. Our three main aims in Eagles are to support Junior Golf, raise funds for the Halberg Foundation and to foster the game of golf generally. I have worked in all three facets – in Junior Golf particularly as our three sons were involved. All three played age-group golf for Otago before University demands took over. I’ve enjoyed working with a good number of junior golf initiatives, both in Oamaru and Cromwell and get a lot of satisfaction from this. Raising funds for the Halberg Foundation is also rewarding, particularly when we hear of the amazing projects our hard work pays for. The outstanding total NZ Eagles have raised over more than 50 years is certainly one you should all be proud of. And as for promoting golf that’s not difficult is it? Golf is a wonderful sport in which you get to play lots of different courses, meet many like -minded people who become your friends, and also compete alongside others with a wide range of abilities. As your National President I would hope you feel free to contact me or our National Secretary Peter Brownie regarding any concerns you have about the Society or indeed anything you think you should be discussed by the management group. Last but not least I wish you all happy golfing. As I write this I’m confined to barracks with Covid and can’t wait until I get out on the fairways again….next week maybe?
SOUTH OTAGO HALBERG – FEBRUARY 2022 About 40 golfers, including 10 Eagles enjoyed a great day out at the South Otago Halberg held at Toko Golf Club on Sunday February 13. It was a little bit damp overhead but the course was in great order and such was the generosity of so many sponsors everyone got a prize. The golfers were generous too and the organisers were able to sell 7 raffles - 700 tickets...absolutely amazing. Special guests on the day were Halberg representative Cherie Oldham and Eagles Vice president (now President) Bob Brent. Approximately $1900 was raised on the day. The winners of the top prizes were local club members Lisa Rutherford with 36 points and Murray Scott with 42. (Pictured with Otago Eagles Club Captain Murray Nyhon). WELLINGTON HALBERG FIELD DAY REPORT – APRIL 2022 This was originally scheduled in February but was postponed because of some very inclement weather. Sunday April 3rd was a very pleasant day for the 100 golfers who took part at the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club. The course is a very good challenge and fortunately there was only light breezes on the day. This Halberg Field Day is a celebration of the winners of the 20+ Halberg Days held at the various Wellington Golf Clubs in 2021. These days, despite Covid, raised $37,200 in 2021 for the Halberg Foundation Activity Fund. Following the golf, Richard Gibbs spoke of the achievements of the Young Golfer of the Year Alec Prentice and he was presented with the cup by Bob Rosevear, together with an Eagles polo shirt embroidered with Eagles logo and “Young Golfer of the Year 2021”. Alec was also invited to be a Wellington Honorary Junior Eagle. Halberg was represented by Trustees Matt Wenlock and Dean Galt and Halberg Executive, Duane Kale who is also International Paraplegic Committee Vice President. Matt spoke briefly and introduced Duane who thanked the Eagles for their 50+ years of raising funds for the Halberg Foundation and that so many young people had been able to get into activities and sport because of these funds. Duane accepted the $37,200 cheque from the Wellington Eagles. There were 5 divisions and the results were: Halberg Men’s Winners Division – David Lester Clarke (Martinborough) 42pts, Russell Smith (PBGC) 38 pts and Joe Hapi (Otaki) 35 pts. Halberg Ladies Winners Division – Mary Procter (PBGC) 35pts, Sala Churchwood (Shandon) 34pts, Kris Chamberlain (Martinborough) 31pts Eagles & Invited Guests Division – Alec Prentice (PBGC) 37pts – yes the YGOY and shot 67, Dean Galt (Miramar) 35pts, Glen Michell (PBGC) and Terry Bastion (Karori) 34pts Eaglasses & Invited Guests – Sue Armstrong (PBGC) & Lynne Sutherland (Eketahuna) 36pts, Kay Wall (Otaki) 35pts Paraparaumu Members Division – Lynette Smith 41pts, David Molony 40pts, Beau Tuheke 39pts. Best team score – 136 from the Paraparaumu Beach team. AORANGI HALBERG, TEMUKA, 14 APRIL The Aorangi Halberg was held at the Temuka Golf club Thursday 14th April. The event was well attended with 26 teams of four taking part. The local Eagles did a great job in organizing the event, collecting sponsorship and extracting money from participants both on and off the course. The day was fine and sunny and the company was good, unfortunately our National Secretary and I lost the haggle to Aorangi president Paul Gardner and Canterbury president Neil Robertson. Well done Aorangi for running a successful day, good to see lots of local Eagles supporting the event WEST OTAGO HALBERG, 25 APRIL A mild day greeted the good numbers of golfers which arrived to play in the West Otago Halberg, held this year at the Heriot Golf Club on Anzac Day, 25th April 2022. As the afternoon wore on a southerly change cooled things considerably and most were very happy to finish just ahead of the rain. However the course was in great condition and a credit to the locals who look after it. This event is played in conjunction with the challenge between the neighbouring Tapanui and Heriot clubs for a much sought-after trophy, the Harrison Weaver Rosebowl. Again this year the result was very close, with the visitors taking the trophy back to Tapanui by a tiny margin. Locals dominated the prizes for the day, and detailed results will be gathered and published in our next newsletter. Afterwards all were treated in the clubhouse to a wonderful array of food supplied by the ladies, and numerous raffles of farm-killed meat which proved immensely popular. All told, a wonderful day with a healthy amount of money raised for Halberg, thanks to the efforts of the local Eagles. Sincere thanks to the Heriot and Tapanui Eagles for a wonderful day.
NORTHLAND HALBERG, 5 May I attended the Northland Halberg at the Whangarei Golf Club on Thursday May 5. A large field of more than 100 began play in the rain but the weather improved remarkably and we then enjoyed pleasant playing conditions. I joined National Past President Bob Rosevear, Northland President Mike Gavin and Halberg Rep James Glen on the tee and we had a very enjoyable day, though once again the National President and National Past President lost the haggle – which seems to have become a tradition. The local Eagles did a wonderful job of running the day, despite the fact the two main organisers went down with Covid and the baton had to be passed to the rest at the last minute. With entry fees, raffles and an auction, approximately $7000 was raised - extremely well done! I want to pass on a big thankyou to Mike Gavin and his wife Leona for their hospitality while they had me to stay for 2 nights. You two were wonderful hosts though I must apologise for the (Covid Related) phone call the next day - sorry team. Well done Northland Eagles. Keep up the good work. Bob Brent National President
